Program Note

Lion is written to be freely interpreted by a solo tubist to recreate a scene of a lion hunting a gazelle. Various effects ranging from air sounds, flutter tongue, extreme range considerations, percussive hits to the bell and mouthpiece, and vowel modifications are employed to create a more vivid illustration of a gruesome scene. The clash between the lion and gazelle is illustrated very chaotically, leaving the player to rely on intuition to recreate the fight. No death is the same!
