Program Note

Migration pairs two piccolos to create a light-hearted dance inspired by the departure of birds from colder places to warmer ones. The opening section is hopeful for warmth with its setting in the major mode, but the onset of winter brings slow contemplation set to the minor mode. In an exciting coda, the birds fly away at last. The two piccolo parts alternate roles between melody and harmony, giving each player an opportunity to lead this “bird-dance.”
