Inspired by some Chinese philosophies, Afternoon In A Memory brings forth consideration for the relationship of activity and rest. This short ternary work is divided by a section of pause and negative space, a place of reflection and consideration that reminded the composer of an afternoon spent in the sun in the shade of an oak tree. The title leads to ambiguity: can an afternoon being located within a memory as a physical place, or is it instead a poetic framing of a memory of an afternoon? This work does not serve to inspire answers, but instead questions that you may also ask while sitting in the shade of an oak tree.
