Crying Over Vile, Iridescent Dairy was written as an emotional response to the developing coronavirus crisis. The piece was conceptualized and started in late March 2020 and completed over the following months. Hoping to capture in time the societal response to COVID-19, spoken narration was written to emulate news reporters' headlines on television. The title, when abbreviated, spells out COVID, and is inspired by the expression "crying over spilled milk." The inspiration lies in the general response (at least, from a US-centric point of view) to COVID-19 in the early stages of the international pandemic: why worry so much, why cry over spilled milk? The composer's belief was that the milk was worth crying over and that the milk was the blood of human lives.
The timeline of the text ranges from the beginning of widespread detection of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China (as reporting increased in early January 2020) through March 26, 2020 when the United States was reported to have the most cases of COVID-19 of any country in the world (at that time, slightly under 100,000 cases).
