l'année des saisons has been inspired greatly by various excursions in nature. This work includes a rain stick and set of wind chimes for more conspicuous sounds, but the use of piccolo whistle tones for light, natural, and suggestive sounds and bowed vibraphone / glockenspiel for "shimmering" sounds like reflective water also contribute to this sound world. As this work developed, themes and images tied to cherry blossom trees and emotional journeys came to mind, finally culminating in a title that translates to "[The] Year of Seasons." Every year has a rotation of seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter), but this seemingly-obvious indication is meant to suggest a form of "weight" to those seasons. And thus, the work can be interpreted as a series of episodes which begin and culminate in the same region. What will come next year?
