When Our Leaves Fell
• written for String Quartet; 9' 00"
( 2018, rev. 2020 )
When Our Leaves Fell presents a musical theme of longing as an imagined narrative takes place: two individuals move through life together, as friends, with their childhood quickly fading. The opening harmonies inspired the composer to envision a scene of autumn colors where this pair ask each other about the future. Their struggle with coming-of-age is reflected in the rapid, dance-like middle section, to resolve with optimism in the final cadence, in the major mode, after skirting around minor tonalities for 8 minutes.
